Should braces be removed if the overbite is still present?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 19-year-old student. My dentist is considering removing my braces soon, but I am not satisfied with the results. I still have an overbite and a noticeable midline misalignment. When I shared my concerns, the dentist only advised me to wear a class II elastic in an X-shape on the left side of my mouth. I feel that this is worsening the symmetry of my teeth and face. Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I can see why you are concerned; the midline asymmetry and overbite are quite noticeable, and it is completely valid to feel uneasy about ending treatment without seeing the results you expected.

How long have you been wearing the braces? Also, how regular have you been with your follow-up visits and wearing the elastics as instructed? These things really do make a difference.

Typically, midline correction can take three to nine months, sometimes longer, depending on the severity. Small shifts tend to respond faster, but larger ones take more time. Also, asymmetry could be due to your teeth or your jaw. If it is dental, it is usually treatable with braces, but if it is skeletal, surgery might be needed for a full correction.

Habits like nail-biting, chewing pencils, or using your teeth to open things can also slow progress. And elastics, though small, play a huge role; they are powerful tools when used correctly.

In your case, a full clinical and radiographic assessment is needed to understand the bigger picture. If you still feel unsure and your orthodontist suggests removing the braces, I would strongly recommend getting a second opinion. It is your smile, and you deserve to feel confident about the outcome.

I hope this helps.

Kindly revert so I can assist you further.

Thank you.
