How long should I wear a retainer after orthodontic treatment?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had braces for about one and a half years. After the treatment was completed, I wore a plastic Invisalign retainer for another one and a half years. So, in total, I have been wearing a retainer for around two years now. I want to know how long it takes for the bone to fully stabilize in the new alignment. Is wearing the retainer for two years enough, or should I continue for three years? The issue is that I frequently have to change my retainer because it gets damaged. Every time I switch to a new one, my face feels shrunken or hollow, which stresses me out. That is why I am considering stopping retainer use completely, even at night.

So, my question is: When is it safe to stop wearing the retainer altogether?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Has a dental history- has undergone braces treatment.

Retainer use is a must after orthodontic treatment, or the treatment outcome after braces will relapse, and malocclusion will start to recur, necessitating another orthodontic check. I suggest permanent use of retainers. If there is a problem with clear retainers, you could ask your orthodontist for permanent fixed retainers of both upper and lower arches, which would be inconspicuous as fixed on the palatal and lingual aspects of the anterior teeth.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
