What could cause white deposits on the teeth?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have white deposition on the base of my teeth. I have had this for the last year. I have ignored it a lot, for which I am ashamed. But now I am in pain whenever I try to eat something hard. Please help me out.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
White deposition around the base of teeth could be tartar deposition, which is a white hard thing around the junction between teeth and gums. This causes inflammation of gums around teeth, causing swollen and easily bleeding gums. This tartar layer is an accumulation of what is called the plaque layer (which is a normal soft deposition from saliva on our teeth). In case of improper or inadequate teeth brushing, this soft layer hardens, causing the formation of this white layer (tartar), which can also turn into a grey color.
Continuous irritation from this layer to gums affects also the bone surrounding teeth leading to bone resorption and in late stages, teeth start moving as they lose their bony support around them. Visiting a dental clinic for a scaling session (cleaning session) is very important to remove this harmful layer, improve esthetics, treat inflamed gums, and stop further damage to bone surrounding teeth.
I hope this helps you.
Thank you.
