Should I consider medication for depression at age 68?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 68-year-old male and have been dealing with depression for a long time, but lately I have been wondering whether I should finally consider medication.

I have always tried to push through with exercise, staying busy, and talking things out, but the last year has been difficult. Between retirement, health issues, and losing a few close friends, it feels like the clouds are not lifting the way they used to.

Some days I can fake it until I make it, and other days it feels like I am just running on empty.

For people who started depression medication later in life, what made them decide it was time to give it a try?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.

First of all, some investigations should be done, such as:

  1. Thyroid function tests.

  2. Liver function tests.

  3. Kidney function tests.

  4. MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) of the brain.

  5. ECG (electrocardiogram).

These tests help exclude organic causes of depression and ensure that you are medically fit.

The second solution is that you should first undergo CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) since it helps one learn how to react calmly to stressors and control one’s emotions. In this way, CBT may prove effective in your particular case.

Lastly, proper and balanced diets that include vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids like fish oil and flaxseed oil will assist the brain in producing neurotransmitters like dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin.

Finally, you can start medical treatment under the complete supervision of a psychiatrist. These medications are generally safe when prescribed appropriately, and the above investigations can help your psychiatrist choose the right medication and the correct dose for you.

Follow-up visits are important in monitoring your reaction to the treatment so that adjustments may be made.

I hope that I have been able to answer your question.

Please let me know if I can help you further.

Thank you.
