How long does PMMA filler facial swelling last?

Hi doctor,

I got a PMMA filler, and my face is extremely swollen. My face looks absolutely huge, and I am desperate and scared that it will not go back to normal. I got it on my jaw, 4.5 mL on each side, but it is so swollen. I cannot sleep thinking that I might have ruined my face forever.

My doctor first prescribed me a corticosteroid injection, the name of which I do not recall. Then, after showing him photographs of the swelling on the second day, he prescribed Prednisone, which I took about eight hours ago. Should it not have shown results by now? I cannot look like this. Please help.

I thoroughly read your query and understand your concern.

I saw the picture (attachments are hidden to protect the patient's identity) you sent. Definitely, you are having a lot of swelling, and I can understand your concerns. The PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate) filler, 0.15 fluid ounces on each side, is not much of a problem.

In a few cases, it might cause such a kind of swelling, and a steroid will help. Prednisone will start acting after a few hours. So my suggestion is to wait until it starts its action. However, it might take somewhere from two to three weeks for most of that swelling to come down. Do not worry for now.
