What are the ways to treat perioral dermatitis that flares up?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have perioral dermatitis and have been suffering from flare-ups for the past five years. I have been using topical steroids; however, the condition only aggravates after their use. Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern and would be happy to help. The causes of perioral dermatitis can be inflammation, dryness in the environment, weather conditions, excess use of chemicals, oily and greasy cosmetic products, make-up, or steroids. I suggest the below treatment plan. Apply petrolatum jelly at night for ten days. Apply cream Venusia Max (Propylene Glycol, Emulsifying Wax, Glycerine, Cyclomethicone, and Shea butter) during the daytime for 20 days. Avoid high potency steroid cream use. Take tablet Teczine-M (Levocetirizine and Montelukast) once at night after food for seven days. Apply Coconut oil in mild proportions to soothe the lesion. Is there a burning sensation? Did you have prolonged exposure to sunlight? Do you have a history of photosensitivity? What is the topical steroid that you have used? What is your occupation? Did you start using a new toothpaste? How is the weather at the place you live? Do you have a history of drug or food allergies or alcoholism? What are the aggravating factors? Kindly revert with the answers to the above questions. Thank you.
