When should surgery be done for a 4.5 cm ovarian cyst?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

How long should I wait for surgery with a 4.5 cm ovarian dermoid cyst? I am suffering from medium pain, nausea, and constipation.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com

I understand your concern.

Can you tell me how long you have had these symptoms? And when were you detected with this problem?

Desmoid cysts are usually slow growing and cause on-and-off abdominal pain or symptoms due to compression of surrounding structures. However, they are prone to torsion (twisting), which can cause severe pain and require urgent surgery.

Rarely do they have a chance to undergo cancerous transformation.

Usually, we advise surgery in such cases as a routine elective procedure. I would also advise you to take test markers for germ cell tumors (Lactate dehydrogenase, alpha-fetoprotein, and beta human chorionic gonadotropin) as they are associated with desmoid.

If you have any other questions, I would be happy to help.

Thank you.
