Does diabetes affect oral health?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 41 years old and have had type 1 diabetes since I was a teen. Over the last year, I have gained about 25 pounds, and my HbA1c has increased to 9.6 %. What worries me is that my gums are bleeding every time I brush, and I have read that diabetes might have an impact on oral health. Can weight gain be a contributing factor, or is it something else entirely? I am worried that I will lose my teeth if this does not improve.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Oral health is related to overall general health.

In case of diabetes, it is always a two-way relationship. The higher diabetic levels always have a toll on oral health. The diabetic levels are prone to infection and poor wound healing.

Kindly check with your diabetologist and seek his suggestion to lower your blood glucose levels. As you lower your sugar levels, your oral health will eventually improve. Bleeding gums and inflammation will reduce. One of the main signs of diabetes is halitosis (bad breath), l hope you will encounter that too.

All these can be corrected with your diabetes under control. Kindly brush twice a day, use floss to clean your interdental area, and rinse your mouth after every meal.
