How does diabetes affect oral health and gums?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 41 and have had type 1 diabetes since my teenage years. Over the past year, I have gained weight, and my HbA1c has risen to 9.6 percent. What is concerning me is that my gums have started bleeding every time I brush, and I have read that diabetes can affect oral health. Could the weight gain be contributing to this, or is something else causing it? I am worried that if this does not improve, I might lose my teeth. What steps should I take to address this issue?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Diabetes can affect oral health by causing bone loss beneath the gums, leading to gum recession and reduced support for teeth. This is why bleeding gums may occur. Consult a dentist for a panoramic X-ray (OPG) to assess bone levels. If significant bone loss is detected and teeth show severe mobility, extractions may be necessary.

If bone loss is moderate and teeth are stable, consider LANAP (Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure), a minimally invasive laser flap surgery that helps stabilize gums and reduce mobility. It can effectively postpone further damage and improve oral health.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
