What is the treatment for type 1 diabetes in a 15-year-old?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My 15-year-old niece was just diagnosed with type 1 diabetes after losing a lot of weight and drinking water constantly. We are worried because it came out of nowhere. She is now on insulin, but she is already overwhelmed with counting carbs, checking blood sugar, and worrying about school. Is this something she will always have? How can she stay active like her friends? What signs should we watch for to avoid emergencies, such as low blood sugar? Additionally, does this condition affect girls differently, especially during puberty or menstruation? Please help us understand in simple terms what she is facing in the long term.

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

I am sorry to hear about your niece's diagnosis. Type 1 diabetes is a lifelong condition, but with proper management, she can lead a healthy life. It is normal to feel overwhelmed at first, but with time, counting carbohydrates and checking blood sugar will become routine. She can stay active like her friends by engaging in regular exercise, which helps manage blood sugar levels. Watch for signs of low blood sugar, like shakiness, sweating, and confusion, and always have fast-acting sugar on hand. Diabetes can affect girls differently during puberty and periods, causing blood sugar fluctuations. Extra monitoring and insulin adjustments may be needed during these times. Please book a consultation with me if you would like more detailed information on these points or have other questions.

I hope this information will help you.

Thanks.
