How do I manage my frequent diverticulitis symptoms?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I was diagnosed with diverticulitis from a CT in February. They gave me antibiotics, and for the first time in months, I finally felt good again. Exactly one month later, it happened again, and they called me in for another round. For years, the primary has told me it was just IBS. But I have had about of diarrhea/constipation (at the same time) every month since the fall. Each time I run a slight fever, 99.6 Fahrenheit, for about two days if I stop eating, and it usually improves. I can never figure out what is safe to eat. My skin is looking much older now, and I never feel good. I also stay somewhat anemic.

Two and a half weeks ago, I had my left kidney removed due to cancer. The results were good, and no treatments were needed; my incisions are healing well. But instead of being elated about that, I am having the same bloating, lower mostly left belly pain, and what seems like I cannot empty my bowels. I go often, but it looks like dust in the bowl, and it is very little. So today I am back on liquids and have a fever of 99.6°F. Mine often is at 97.6 Fahrenheit. I have some numbness and pain in that same area from the surgery. It is like nerves, it's prickly, and it burns. It goes from my left groin on that side of my pelvic area and only a couple of inches upward. The first week, I had no feeling there.

The surgeon says it usually takes about six weeks for that to improve. He has me on stool softeners because it takes a while to get things working right again. What I need to know is, could this be diverticulitis every time this happens? Would just like a solid opinion and any advice on how I could make this better at home.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

You might be having irritable bowel syndrome, which is due to the stress you are suffering from. You just cannot think about diverticulitis because of such a low-grade fever (there are a million other causes of low-grade fever, even stress is one of them).

It is good that you are safely recovering from surgery, and you are lucky that you were diagnosed at an early stage. But you need to decrease your stress through physical exertion if possible, and if it is still bothering then you need to start some mood stabilizers (anti-depressants).

Thank you.

The Probable causes

Irritable bowel syndrome.

Investigations to be done

Complete blood count. C- reactive peptide. Urine routine examination. Stool routine examination.

Treatment plan

Tablet Fluoxetine 20 mg once at morning (if stress could not be controlled), Mebeverine 135 mg thrice a day for a month, Ispaghol husk 2 tablespoon in a glass of water every night.
