Is it safe to drink alcohol while taking Vistaril?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 22-year-old male, and I am currently taking Zoloft and Vistaril. I take Zoloft and Vistaril as needed, once and sometimes twice daily. I rarely drink alcohol and know about its interactions with Zoloft, but it is harder to find the interactions with Vistaril. I know I cannot drink alcohol simultaneously as taking a Vistaril, but when is it safe to drink alcohol? When is the Vistaril out of my system? I do not want to get extremely drunk and have a few drinks with some friends.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Vistaril's (Hydroxyzine Pamoate) half-life is around 14 hours, so that it will stay in your system for more than one day. It depends upon your hepatic function. If your liver function is impaired, it will stay in the system longer. If you take Vistaril and alcohol together, then it will cause more sedation and drowsiness the next day. So from my point of view, stay away from alcohol because you are taking Zoloft (Sertraline), which is an antidepressant. So you may have an anxiety disorder or depressive disorder, both of which can worsen due to alcohol.

I hope this addresses your concerns. Please feel free to follow up if you have any further questions.

Thank you.
