Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have hypothyroidism that is being treated with Levothyroxine. My doctor has just put me on Atorvastatin because of my high cholesterol. I am not sure whether to take them or not with the side effects, saying not to take them with hypothyroidism medication. What should I do?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

It appears that you have hypothyroidism (a condition where there is an insufficiency of thyroid hormone) and dyslipidemia (an imbalance of lipids), which is also due to hypothyroidism. Atorvastatin can be taken with co-existing treatment for hypothyroidism. Thyroxine is to be taken in the morning and Atorvastatin has to be taken at night. Atorvastatin treatment might be for three to six months, depending upon your lipid levels. Most of the time patients do not experience any side effects. If at all they occur, then we can change to another lipid-lowering agent. However, pregnancy is to be avoided during this period.

I hope this information will help you. Please revert in case of more queries.

Thank you.
