Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am 18 and around 132 pounds. I have a dry cough and throat irritation that is bothering me, and I cannot sleep at night. I do not have a fever, though. I recently used Ascoril-D, which helped me last year, but is there a better option you can suggest?
Kindly advise.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Dry cough without fever is commonly caused by viral infections, allergies, throat irritation, or postnasal drip. Since you have experienced this before and found relief with Chlorpheniramine Maleate, it is likely a recurrent issue triggered by similar causes.
Dry cough may be due to a viral upper respiratory tract infection, which often presents with throat irritation and coughing. Allergic rhinitis or postnasal drip can also cause persistent throat tickling and coughing. Additionally, environmental irritants such as smoke, dust, or exposure to air-conditioning may trigger or worsen a dry cough.
Dextromethorphan hydrobromide and Chlorpheniramine maleate (an antihistamine), and since it helped you previously, it remains a valid option. However, if you are looking for an alternative, syrups like Chericof-D, Triprolidine, or Dextromethorphan may be considered. These also contain Dextromethorphan and antihistamines, offering similar relief. A typical dosage is five milligrams at night, up to three times per day, but it is important to follow the instructions on the label or consult a pharmacist or physician for guidance.
In addition to medication, supportive home remedies can enhance recovery. Warm saline gargles two to three times daily, steam inhalation once or twice a day, and drinking a mixture of ginger, honey, and warm water can soothe the throat naturally. It is also important to avoid irritants like cigarette smoke, cold air, and strong perfumes.
For better sleep, try keeping your head elevated with an extra pillow to reduce nighttime coughing. Using a humidifier in your room can also help prevent throat irritation caused by dry air. Medical attention should be sought if your cough lasts more than 10 days or if you develop symptoms such as fever, chest pain, difficulty breathing, or coughing up sputum.
While Chlorpheniramine Maleate remains effective, alternatives like Chericof-D, Triprolidine, or Dextromethorphan may provide similar benefits. Combining these with home care measures will support recovery and improve sleep quality.
