Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
My mom had gallbladder surgery a few months back. After the surgery, she was prescribed antibiotics, including Linezolid.
About a month later, she started experiencing dry mouth and developed oral candidiasis. After treatment with antifungals, those symptoms went away, but they returned again.
Currently, dry mouth is still an issue. Yesterday, after drinking hot tea, her mouth became swollen, and today I noticed white patches again. Fortunately, the swelling decreased this morning.
To promote saliva production, she constantly chews Xylitol gum. Is there any other way we can treat this condition?
Please guide.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
Your mother’s dry mouth and recurring white patches (thrush) began after her surgery and the use of antibiotics like Linezolid, which can disrupt the natural balance in the mouth and lead to these issues.
Even with her normal past blood sugar tests, it is important to check her blood sugar and immune system again, as recurrent thrush may indicate underlying problems.
Schedule laboratory tests soon to assess blood sugar levels (both fasting and post-meal) and markers of immunity, such as white blood cell count. Even if previous results were normal, they can change.
High blood sugar levels can promote thrush growth. These tests will help determine if diabetes or weakened immunity is contributing to the problem, which can help prevent future occurrences.
Consider using topical antifungal gels like Miconazole (Daktarin) or Nystatin directly on the patches four times a day for 7 to 14 days.
Apply them after meals and before bedtime. If using a liquid form, swish it around in the mouth and avoid eating or drinking for 30 minutes afterward.
Clotrimazole paint is also effective, but if you don’t achieve complete relief, switch gels to prevent recurrence.
Continue using Xylitol gum to stimulate saliva production, and make sure to sip room-temperature water frequently.
Rinsing the mouth with a baking soda and salt solution three times daily can provide soothing relief. Avoid hot foods and drinks to prevent irritation, and consider using a humidifier at night.
It is important to see a doctor promptly for tests and to obtain a prescription for the antifungal gel, as recurring thrush can indicate underlying issues that need to be addressed.
Maintain good oral hygiene, and avoid smoking and alcohol. Following this plan should help alleviate symptoms effectively.
Thank you.
