What causes pain in the extracted area even after one week?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My wisdom tooth was extracted a week ago. Even after taking Acetaminophen (Tylenol) and Ibuprofen tablets, the pain did not subside. Due to pain, I am unable to sleep.

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query and understood your concern.

You may have a dry socket infection, caused by the loss of a blood clot in the extracted area. I suggest you follow the instructions mentioned below.

  1. Use a warm salt water gargle twice daily for a week to get some relief.
  2. Visit your dentist for cleaning and debridement of the wound.
  3. Take antibiotic tablets like Augmentin (Amoxicillin and Potassium Clavulanate) along with painkillers. Consult a specialist doctor, talk with them, and take medications with their consent.

I hope this has helped you.

Thank you.
