My face gets dull and dark with sunscreen. What can I do?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
When I use sunscreen regularly, my face becomes duller and darker than before. What can I do about that?
Kindly suggest.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand how frustrating and confusing this can feel, especially when you are doing the right thing by using sunscreen, but notice your skin looking duller or darker instead.
This is very common in young women, and it does not mean that sunscreen is harming your skin. There are clear reasons for this, and it can be corrected with a few simple changes.
There are several reasons why skin may appear darker or dull after applying sunscreen. It can be related to the ingredients, the way the sunscreen is applied, or how it is removed.
Many sunscreens contain Zinc oxide and antioxidants, which can sometimes react with sunlight and give a darker or duller appearance.
Some sunscreens may also be too heavy or occlusive for your skin type, leading to congestion and a tired-looking complexion. Applying too much sunscreen at once or not spreading it evenly can cause patchiness and uneven tone.
Additionally, if sunscreen is not removed properly at night, residue can build up over time and contribute to dullness.
To prevent this, choose a lightweight, gel-based or fluid sunscreen that is labeled non-comedogenic and does not leave a white cast, containing kiwi fruit extract, witch hazel extract, water, Butylene glycol, and hydrogenated polyisobutene with SPF (sun protection factor) 30 sunscreen.
You can also try tinted sunscreens, but it is important to choose a shade that matches your skin tone, as using a lighter or darker shade can cause a grayish effect. These are generally better suited for young skin and sit more naturally on the face.
Apply sunscreen in thin layers using the two-finger method, and gently dab and blend instead of rubbing harshly. Allow it to settle for a few minutes before stepping out or applying makeup. If you sweat a lot, gently blot your face; do not rub before reapplying.
Proper cleansing at night is equally important. Use a gentle face wash, and if your sunscreen is water-resistant, follow a double-cleansing method (micellar water or a cleansing balm followed by a face wash) to remove all residue. This step alone often helps restore brightness within a few weeks.
Please remember that temporary dullness does not mean pigmentation. True tanning or darkening develops over weeks, whereas sunscreen-related dullness is usually due to product texture or residue.
Do not stop using sunscreen; sun protection is essential at your age to prevent future pigmentation and premature aging.
With the right sunscreen choice and routine, your skin can remain protected and bright at the same time.
I hope this answers your query.
Thank you.
