Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My left ear has been hurting since a week after I tried to clean it. I am hearing a loud beating sound in my left ear, like a heartbeat. I have never had any problems with my ear or ear canals or my overall health growing up. However, I decided to clean my left ear canal because I felt something was inside (blocking me from hearing), which is also a narrow or smaller canal when compared to my right canal. It started hurting, and the deeper I went, the more it hurt.

After cleaning my left ear, I felt a throbbing pain for a minute, and then it stopped. I still got a feeling that something was in my ear. So, the next day, I dropped some castor oil as I heard that it was good for removing or softening ear wax. But still, nothing came out. After that, my earblock got worse. I can not hear anything through my left ear sometimes, and I developed an earache every day for the past week. I also hear a heartbeat sound from my left ear. I also started getting headaches on the same side around the same time after putting castor oil in my ear.

The headaches come and go. I had a sharp and throbbing pain on the upper left side of my face. It has been a week since all this has been happening. I had the headaches only two times.

I do not know what to do and who to ask for help. I never felt this way before when cleaning my ear. It is very painful. Should I be concerned? Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

We welcome you to the icliniq.com family.

I appreciate the confidence you place in me for your healthcare consultation.

Based on your symptoms, you may have an ear infection or impacted earwax. The pain, throbbing, and hearing loss in your left ear could be signs of an infection, while the heartbeat sound and headaches may be related to the pressure buildup caused by the impacted wax.

It is important not to try to clean your ears with cotton swabs or other objects, as this can push wax further into the ear canal and cause more problems. Instead, you can see an ENT (ear, nose, and throat) doctor, who can clean your ears altogether or use a bulb syringe with warm water to gently rinse out any excess wax. They may also recommend antibiotics for an infection or ear drops to soften and remove impacted wax. Do not wait too long to seek medical attention, as untreated ear infections can lead to more serious complications like hearing loss or permanent damage to the eardrum.

I hope this information will help you.

Please revert in case of more queries.

Thank you.
