What are the safest long-term treatments for my eczema?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am 24 years old and have had eczema since childhood. My skin is always itchy, especially on my arms and neck, and sometimes it gets so bad that I scratch until it bleeds. Steroid creams give relief, but I do not want to use them forever. Moisturizers help, but only for a few hours.

  1. Are there safer long-term treatments like biologic injections or newer medicines for atopic dermatitis?

  2. Do food allergies really make eczema worse, and should I get tested for them?

Please guide.

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concerns.

Atopic dermatitis (eczema) is a chronic condition, and while certain topical treatments are effective for flare-ups, you are right to be cautious about long-term use due to potential side effects.

For safer long-term control, several newer treatment options are available that a dermatologist may discuss with you. Non-steroid topical treatments are available that help manage inflammation without the concerns associated with long-term steroid use.

For moderate to severe cases, advanced therapies, including injectable and oral treatment options, have shown promising results in controlling symptoms and reducing itching under physician supervision.

Daily moisturizing remains essential, but combining it with advanced therapies, as recommended by a dermatologist, may support better long-term symptom management.

While food allergies can worsen eczema in some children, they are a less common trigger in adults compared to irritants, stress, infections, or climate changes. Allergy testing is only recommended if there is a clear pattern of food-related flare-ups, such as itching or rashes occurring shortly after eating specific foods.

I hope this answers your query. Feel free to reach out anytime.

Thank you.
