Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I took the Ulipristal acetate tablet around four months ago, and ever since then, I have been getting three periods. All three periods have been two weeks long. The first two were thick clots, but the third one, which I am on now, was thin bright red blood. I went to the doctor, and all he did was referred me for an ultrasound scan. I have bad constipation and nausea. Is there any advice you could give me?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

Ulipristal acetate is an emergency contraceptive. When taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex, the proper dose can prevent pregnancy. It cannot be used as cyclic or regular contraceptives. I suggest you to follow a few instructions mentioned below:

  1. Avoid if you have renal and hepatic impairment.
  2. It can give gastrointestinal symptoms like vomiting.
  3. If you are a teenager and your reproductive system is still in a developmental phase, you can have ovulatory, anovulatory, heavy, or scanty cycles.
  4. Externally induced hormones can give you more symptoms of side effects .
  5. Consume a healthy, soft, home-cooked, nutritious diet with less salt, sugar, and plenty of water.
  6. Daily exercise, swimming, and yoga can be done to maintain a normal weight, physical health, and body mass index.
  7. Consume more fruits and vegetables.
  8. Try to have a full check-up and treatment of any other health issue you have.
  9. Take tablet Cyclizine 50 mg 30 to 45 minutes before a meal if you still have vomiting. Consult a physician as well for a review.
  10. Get an abdominal scan, pelvic scan, serum nitrogen, urea electrolyte, complete blood count, thyroid function test, and discuss here or with a local gynecologist for further management.
  11. Start iron supplements immediately.
  12. In case of very low hemoglobin, you might need a blood transfusion. You can have a tablet of Mefenamic Acid 500 mg and a tablet of Tranexamic acid 500 mg eight hourly from day two to day five or a total of 5 days from day two if there is very heavy bleeding.
  13. In case of dizziness, fainting, or heavy bleeding, report to the hospital.
  14. Kindly consult a specialist and take the medications with their consent.

    Take care.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
