Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

How to know if I am in an emotionally abusive relationship? What are some key markers of an abusive relationship? Please help me.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to iciniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

There are no specific standardized scales that can help in evaluating if a relationship is abusive or not.

A lot of things help to determine the abusive relationship.

  1. Disqualifying the positives of a partner and maximizing the negative things are the most important factors in an abusive relationship.
  2. Generalizing things and stubbornness on minor things.
  3. Failure to understand the point of others and failure to empathize with the emotions of a partner are also important markers of an abusive relationship.
  4. Making threats to partners.

These are generalized things, if we narrow down the points then some specific things like

  1. Controlling or limiting the finances of the partner.
  2. Isolation of partner socially, or even preventing the partner to use social sites or limiting the use of social media.
  3. Forceful control or even sexual intercourse without will.
  4. Verbal or physical abuse

Thank you.
