At 25, how do I keep faith with this new diagnosis?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I do not even know how to start this, honestly; I was just diagnosed with epilepsy three weeks ago after having two seizures back to back, and my whole world kind of fell apart after that.

I cannot drive anymore; I had to tell my job, and I do not even know what my future looks like now. At 25, how do I stay hopeful about my future with this new diagnosis?

Like, is it even possible to have a normal life with this

Please help.

Thank You.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concern

I can understand that it is difficult to adjust to a diagnosis that can truly change your life. Epilepsy is a treatable disorder, and all you have to do is take medicines on a regular basis.

Once you are seizure-free for almost one month, you can resume activities. Avoid driving for at least one year. However, you can live a totally normal life with epilepsy.

Initially, when you are diagnosed with this kind of disorder, your brain takes time to adapt, so at this stage, feeling devastated is totally normal, and everyone feels the same. It will take some time to make adjustments with this disorder, and then your life will become stable again.

What you can do right now is to regularly take medicine, do regular exercise, especially walking, and avoid things that can trigger seizures.

Do not change sleep patterns; avoid bright light and sudden noises; avoid going to heights or near fire and water where you can injure yourself. You will be totally fine after a few weeks, and then you can completely live a normal life.

So please try to follow up if you feel this answer would be helpful for you.

And I hope you will feel better soon.

Thank you.
