Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have been diagnosed with extrapulmonary tuberculosis (pleural effusion). But the doctor had also advised a test for HIV. I never had sex and every time I get a needle (for blood tests or medical purposes), I make sure it is new. Should I still go for the test?
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern. HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) can only be transmitted by sexual contact (anal or vaginal or oral), blood transfusion, exchange of contaminated syringes or needles, or an HIV-infected mother can transmit it to her child during pregnancy, delivery, or through breast milk. It is unlikely to have if you have none of the factors. HIV and Tuberculosis are closely connected in their relationship. It is a routine protocol in various centers to test for HIV and tuberculosis, and vice versa. I would suggest you get the test done as per the recommendations.
I hope this helps you.
Hank you.
Regards.
