What causes eye irritation after using skincare products?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello Doctor,

I am reaching out because I have been experiencing persistent eye irritation related to skincare products. Specifically, I have noticed that almost every moisturizer and sunscreen I try causes my eyes to become red, teary, and irritated, even when I apply the products carefully and avoid the eye area.

I have tested a variety of formulations, including those labeled as fragrance-free and suitable for sensitive skin, but the problem persists across all of them. I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to discuss this with a dermatologist and explore possible solutions or alternatives. Thank you in advance for your help, and I hope to book an appointment soon.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to iCliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concerns.

Thank you for reaching out and for describing your concern in detail. It is very helpful. What you are experiencing is not uncommon and can be quite frustrating. Even when skincare products are applied away from the eye area, certain ingredients can migrate through the skin’s natural oils or vapors and cause ocular irritation, especially if your eyes are particularly sensitive.

There are a few possible reasons this might be happening. One is invisible migration: many moisturizers and sunscreens can travel toward the eyes due to body heat, rubbing, or sweating, even when they are not applied directly around the eye. Another possibility is irritating ingredients. Even products labeled “sensitive” or “fragrance-free” may still contain chemical ultraviolet (UV) filters (such as avobenzone or oxybenzone), essential oils, preservatives (like phenoxyethanol or parabens), alcohols, or certain silicones. These substances can cause irritation through vapors or skin absorption.

In some cases, the reaction may be due to allergic contact dermatitis or irritant dermatitis. If the redness and tearing occur frequently, it could be a sign of a true allergic or irritant reaction. Sometimes, even a very small amount of an allergen is enough to trigger symptoms around the eyes.

Here are some steps you can take to manage and prevent this issue.

  1. Perform a patch test before using any new product. Apply it on the inside of your arm and a small amount below the cheekbone (still away from the eyes) for three days to observe any reactions.

  2. Switch to mineral-based sunscreens only. Choose products that contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as the only active ingredients. Avoid chemical filters such as avobenzone and octocrylene.

  1. Simplify your skincare routine. Use products with short ingredient lists and avoid layering too many products at once. Choose a basic, non-comedogenic moisturizer.

  1. Avoid rubbing or touching your eyes. This can worsen symptoms or transfer product residue accidentally.

Consider seeing an allergist or dermatologist for a patch test panel. This can help identify specific triggers and guide your skincare choices. A professional evaluation can also help tailor a skincare routine that supports both your comfort and skin health.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
