What can cause left eye swelling, itching, and discharge?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 32 years old. The problem my left eye is swollen, red, itchy, and discharge coming out of it. This happens when I get less sleep or awake late at night. On other occasions when the eyelid gets itchy and then the condition exacerbates. Also, the red eye has the same symptoms but to a lesser extent as compared to the left one.

Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

I am very sorry to hear about your medical condition, but I am glad you are paying close attention to the changes in your body. Please do not worry I am here to help you. Based on your symptoms and the picture you shared, I strongly believe you have developed allergic conjunctivitis in your left eye. This condition is often caused by inflammatory hormones, such as interleukins, which can be transported to the eye following stressful situations like lack of sleep. It is not caused by bacteria or viruses, but the irritation can create an opportunity for these organisms to enter and potentially worsen the redness.

To manage this condition, I recommend using topical Dexamethasone eye drops (0.2 percent), which is a corticosteroid to reduce inflammation. The dosage is one to two drops twice daily (BID) for one week. Dexamethasone eye drops include Maxidex, Dexasol, and Ozurdex.

If you have more concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to schedule a direct appointment or follow-up.

I hope this addresses your concerns.

Thank you.

Regards.
