How to reduce the eyelid swelling that is getting bigger and red?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 23-year-old female, and I woke up yesterday with a swollen eyelid. There was discomfort every time I blinked. I tried cold compress yesterday, cleaned it with Systane eyelid wipes, and put some eye drops. But it is still getting worse, especially after waking up today. The swelling is getting bigger, and it is red. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to iclinq.com.

As per the description, you might have an external hordeolum, an infection of the root of eyelashes. There is redness, pain, and swelling of the eyelid. I suggest trying warm compresses. Apply antibiotic ointment along the lid margin. Take systemic antibiotics like Ciprofloxacin tablet 500 mg twice daily for five days (I assume you are not allergic to ciprofloxacin). This may take a week for recovery; having said that, it is a provisional diagnosis. Kindly share a picture of the eyes for evaluation. I hope this will help you. Regards.
