I have tiny bumps on my face and neck. How to get rid of them?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am experiencing an increasing number of small bumps on my face, neck, shoulders, and nape.

Please suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Thank you for sharing your detailed history and photos (the attachments were removed to protect the patient's identity). Based on your description and the images, it appears that you have comedonal acne.

The small bumps over your face, neck, shoulders, and nape are likely closed and open comedones, which are common in adults and can increase gradually due to hormonal fluctuations, occlusive skincare products, or friction from clothing or hair.

For treatment, a topical combination approach works best.

You can use Clindamycin lotion 1% in the morning on affected areas to reduce bacterial colonization and inflammation. At night, apply a thin layer of Benzoyl peroxide gel to help clear comedones and prevent new lesions.

It is important to apply sunscreen daily, as both Benzoyl peroxide and sun exposure can increase skin sensitivity.

Avoid harsh scrubs, excessive exfoliation, or picking at the lesions, as these can worsen inflammation and post-acne marks, which can lead to inflammation, infection, and permanent scarring.

Be mindful of friction from clothing, hats, hair, or straps that can aggravate acne on the shoulders, nape, and neck. Minimize or avoid comedogenic hair and skincare products.

For hair, choose light, non-greasy formulations and avoid letting products sit on acne-prone areas. Maintain a balanced diet and hydration; while diet is not the main cause of acne, excessively high glycemic foods and dairy may worsen flare-ups in some individuals.

Improvement is usually gradual over six to eight weeks, and adherence to the regimen is key. You are already being proactive, which is excellent. Consistent care now can prevent scarring and reduce long-term recurrence.

I hope it helped with your query.

Thank you.
