Are there standard antibiotics to lower low-grade fever?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My 17-year-old son has been having a fever, a wet cough, sore throat, and loose motions for four days. The temperature has been dropping by 1 degree Fahrenheit per day. Day one, it was 103 degrees Fahrenheit, next day, 102, 101, and then 100. But, since two days ago, it has been 100 degrees Fahrenheit in the morning and 101 at night. The local doctor said it may be a viral infection, which is getting better, but it got stuck at 100 degrees Fahrenheit. He suggested Rinifol, Chericof, and Betadine gargles. He suggested that if the temperature is again 100 degrees Fahrenheit in the morning within one day, then it may indicate bacterial origin fever. Then, to decide on the antibiotics, he said, we have to get the blood culture and blood sensitivity, CBC, and CRP done. Is this the right approach? Also, are there no standard antibiotics for such low-grade fevers? Is the blood test required to point toward a specific antibiotic?
Please help.
Thank you.
