How to manage fever, cold and cough due to pharyngitis?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

This is my father's CBC report,

Hb-12.4 g/dl.

WBC - 4200 per μl.

Neutrophils - 41 %.

Eosinophils and monocytes - 3 cells/mcL.

Lymphocytes - 53 per μl.

ESR - 18 in 1 hour 30 minutes and 35 in 1 hour

Serology test - Widal - St O and H -1 in 40 dilutions (positive).

My father is 54 years old and had a fever last month of 102° F. And it is totally cured but he still has a little bit of cold and cough, not feeling well I think , and suffered from pharyngitis. So what is the problem? He has lots of mental confusion also. Because he says that he is suffering from typhoid fever but I tell him it is normal and what should be his diet. Also, he is taking tablets B-complex, Gudcef Plus, Polo Aceclofenac. My question is what type of infection does he have or is it typhoid? Kindly suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concern. All I can understand from your description is, certainly, he is having pharyngitis probably viral. It is not typhoid. This low titer positivity will remain positive lifelong and not suggestive of typhoid. So no need to worry. I suggest that he should continue the tablet Gudcef Plus (Cefpodoxime and Ofloxacin) and if not responding then have tablet Azithromycin 500 mg once a day with some antacids like tablet Pantoprazole before breakfast once a day for five days. He should also have Betadine gargles four times a day. For cough, he can have syrup Alex (Phenylephrine and Chlorpheniramine Maleate) two teaspoons whenever needed up to three times a day, and for common cold tablet Allegra (Fexofenadine Hydrochloride and Montelukast) 120 mg once a day for three to four days. Avoid cold food items. Can also continue the B-complex. I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
