Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My three-month-old baby boy is suffering from a fever of 100 degrees Fahrenheit, and I have noticed an orange stain in his diaper. He also has a 0.5-millimeter arterial septal defect, and I am concerned if all these are interlinked. Kindly suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to Icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

With the information provided, I would like to tell you that 0.5 milli meter of the arterial septal defect (ASD) and orange staining of the diaper is not related.

It is a tiny defect and most probably will close in due time, at this age it does not require any intervention.

Orange staining of stool is also normal at this age, it is a transition stool color. If the staining is due to urine, then it may be a bit of concentrated urine that needs proper feeding only or it may be due to some medication you are giving him. I suggest you keep the baby with an open diaper for some time and note if it is from stool or urine.

I also request you to provide some more information regarding the following.

  1. What was the birth weight of your son? What is the current weight?
  2. Is the baby breastfeeding or formula milk?
  3. How many times does the baby pass motion in a day? Is he passing normal urine in good quantity?
  4. Since how many days you notice orange-stained diapers?
  5. How frequently do you see orange stains in a day?
  6. Is he active and feeding well?

Kindly provide me with the required details to help you better.

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

At birth, my baby weighed 5.5 pounds and currently, he is 10.3 pounds. He is breastfeeding and urinating one or two times a day, in a little quantities. The child is active and feeding well but has a fever of 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Glad to have you back at icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Your baby is growing well but passing less urine (which may be due to fever or less intake), so it is concentrated urine.

I suggest you follow the below-mentioned instructions:

  1. Feed your baby properly, and more frequently.
  2. You can give a tablet of Paracetamol (calcium stearate) if the temperature is more than 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Note if the fever persists or rises frequently to check for the cause of the fever.
  4. Get a urine analysis routine test done to rule out any other cause.
  5. Kindly consult a specialist, talk to them, and take medications with their consent.

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.
