What causes fever, vomiting, and loose motions in my baby?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My baby is 12 months old. For the past four days, she has been suffering from a fever. Since yesterday, she has also been experiencing vomiting and loose motions.

After taking the medicines advised by the doctor, the fever and loose motions have reduced, but she has not even been drinking water, taking medicines, or breastfeeding since last night. I am worried.

Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concern.

When a young child develops fever, vomiting, and loose motions, and then starts refusing feeds, it naturally becomes very stressful for parents.

The good thing is that the fever and loose motions have improved after medication. However, the most important concern right now is that the baby has not been taking breastfeeds, water, or medicines since last night, because small children can become dehydrated quite quickly.

At this time, please continue giving very small sips of ORS (oral rehydration solution) frequently, even one to two teaspoons every few minutes, and keep trying breastfeeding gently without forcing. Sometimes children accept fluids better in very small amounts given repeatedly.

Please closely observe the following signs in the baby:

  • Urine output (wet diapers or urination).

  • Activity level and alertness.

  • Tears while crying.

  • Dry mouth or sunken eyes.

  • Breathing pattern.

  • Excessive sleepiness or weakness.

If the baby continues refusing feeds or drinks, passes very little urine, develops persistent vomiting, becomes unusually sleepy, or looks weak or unresponsive, then an in-person pediatric assessment is strongly advised, as dehydration may need proper evaluation and treatment.

Most cases of acute gastrointestinal infection improve with supportive care and proper hydration, so the baby is likely to recover well soon. Please keep monitoring feeding, urine output, and overall activity.

I hope this is clear, and if you have any questions at any time, please feel free to ask.

Thank you.
