Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I just finished treatment for a fever and am now experiencing a sweet taste in my mouth instead of a bitter one. The medications I took include Temarim forte, Mixadin cough tablets, Extra C tablets, and antibiotics. I am 19 years old.
Kindly advise.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
It is not uncommon to notice a change in taste after taking medications, especially antibiotics or combination cold and cough medicines, as they can temporarily affect your taste buds or alter the balance of normal bacteria in your mouth.
A sweet taste in the mouth, instead of the usual bitter sensation you expected, is generally not harmful. It can be a side effect of the medications or the recent fever itself, since infections and dehydration can also influence taste perception. This change usually improves once you finish the medications and your body fully recovers.
However, if the sweet taste persists for more than a couple of weeks, becomes stronger, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as excessive thirst, frequent urination, or unexplained weight loss, it is advisable to see a doctor to rule out other causes, including blood sugar issues. For now, staying well-hydrated, maintaining good oral hygiene, and completing your prescribed treatment should help your sense of taste return to normal.
I hope this helps you.
Please feel free to reach out at any time if you have questions or need guidance. I am always here to support you.
Thank you, and best wishes.
