Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I have an open cut on the top joint of my middle finger that I got four days ago. It is healing and looks much better; however, it is still slightly open, even though it closes a little more each day. Should I use a splint to help it heal completely, or should I leave it uncovered?
Please help.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
Finger cuts over joints can be tricky to manage because movement can keep reopening them, but it is encouraging to hear that your wound is improving each day.
Since it is healing well and showing no signs of infection, you generally would not need a full splint. However, providing temporary support and protection can help the cut heal completely.
To care for the wound, gently wash it with mild soap and water once daily, and if there is a slight opening, apply a thin layer of a topical antibiotic, such as Mupirocin 2% ointment, two to three times daily for up to five days.
A short-term splint for three to five days can be beneficial, but avoid using a full rigid splint unless the wound keeps reopening or is deep, as prolonged immobilization can lead to stiffness in the finger joints.
If the cut is not fully closed within seven to 10 days, or if it worsens and shows signs of infection, please arrange a video consultation or an in-person review to reassess the wound and check for any tendon involvement.
You are doing well so far. Most small joint cuts heal effectively with proper protection and time.
Please feel free to ask if you have any additional questions or concerns.
Thank you.
