Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 29-year-old female. I have been reading a lot about the flu virus, which is on the rise now. How fast is it spreading? What are its initial warning signs? How do you find the difference between a normal cold and the flu? What precautionary measures should be followed? Has the CDC provided any treatment or prevention strategies for the flu? Please help.
Thank you.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
The flu, or influenza, is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. The flu can spread through respiratory droplets when an infected person talks, coughs, or sneezes. It can also spread by touching a surface or object contaminated with the virus, followed by touching your mouth, nose, or eyes.
Common symptoms of the flu include:
1. Sudden onset of fever, feeling feverish, or chills.
2. Cough.
3. Sore throat.
4. Runny or stuffy nose.
5. Muscle or body aches.
6. Headaches.
7. Fatigue.
8. Vomiting and diarrhea.
The symptoms of the flu are usually more severe and can include a high fever, body aches, extreme tiredness, and a dry cough. Cold symptoms are typically milder and often come on more gradually. They include a runny or stuffy nose and are less likely to include fever and body aches. The Annual flu vaccination should be taken for everyone six months and older. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water. Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your elbow when you cough or sneeze.
If you have symptoms of the flu, it is best to stay home to avoid spreading the virus to others. Treatment with antiviral medications upon physical examination by a doctor.
I hope that you get your answer.
Please let me know if you need some help.
Thank you.
