What are the causes of bubbly urine?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have been observing bubbly urine almost always. Sometimes it goes away quickly and sometimes lingers. I had a blood test done, and it is normal other than slightly elevated BUN 19 mg/dL, but BUN to creatinine is normal.

I am worried that I am observing bubbly urine despite a normal urinalysis. Could this be bence jones proteins? I am very concerned if it is a myeloma.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

A slightly elevated BUN (blood urea nitrogen) and frothy urine indicate several things ranging from infection to glomerulonephritis. However, dehydration is more likely in your case as the other parameters of the tests are normal.

I understand your BMI (body mass index) is relatively high, and if the values you provided are correct, this could cause decreased body fluid relative to the cell mass and concentrated urine.

As for the possibility of myeloma, your CBC (complete blood count) would not be normal. However, if you upload your results here, I could do some evaluation.

Having said all that, I would like to know if you have any symptoms like chronic headaches, low back pain, or fatigue.

It would help me get to the diagnosis.

Do let me know so that I can help you further.
