Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have a pink pimple under the armpit. I noticed this morning, and I am worried that it could be syphilis. What is this?
Kindly advise.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
It is understandable to feel anxious about any new skin lesion. Based on the description of a small pink pimple under the armpit that appeared suddenly this morning, it is more likely to be a minor skin condition such as folliculitis (inflammation of a hair follicle), a blocked sweat gland, friction-related irritation, or an ingrown hair. These are common in the armpit area due to sweating, shaving, tight clothing, and bacterial growth.
Syphilis is caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. In its primary stage, syphilis typically presents as a painless ulcer called a chancre. This ulcer usually has a firm base and most commonly appears at the site of sexual contact, such as the genital area, anus, or mouth. It does not usually appear as a small pink pimple in the armpit, and it does not typically develop overnight as a tiny bump.
I would suggest the following measures:
Avoid squeezing or picking at the lesion.
Keep the area clean and dry.
Avoid shaving the affected area until it heals.
If the lesion becomes more tender or inflamed, a mild topical antibiotic such as Fusidic acid (a topical antibacterial medication) may be applied twice daily for five to seven days on the affected area only.
The lesion should improve within a few days. Medical evaluation is advised if it rapidly increases in size, becomes very painful, develops pus, forms an ulcer, or if additional symptoms such as fever, generalized rash, or swollen lymph nodes develop.
Based on the current description, this does not appear consistent with a sexually transmitted infection. There is no immediate reason for alarm.
