Can a 40-year-old man find out which foods cause allergies?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 40-year-old male experiencing severe diarrhea and vomiting. I am unsure which food may have caused this. I have allergies to certain foods, but have not been able to identify them.

Is there a test available to determine what I am allergic to?

Additionally, I also experience severe abdominal pain when I consume any food I am allergic to. Furthermore, I typically experience allergy symptoms such as edema and itching all over my body, for which I take Cetirizine.

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

When dealing with food allergies, diagnostic tests such as the skin prick test and the specific IgE (immunoglobulin E) blood test are often employed. Under the guidance of a doctor, individuals may undergo an elimination diet, wherein suspected allergens are removed from their diet for a defined period, typically lasting two to four weeks. After this period, foods are gradually reintroduced one at a time to pinpoint which ones trigger an allergic reaction.

It is crucial to maintain hydration by drinking plenty of fluids and using oral rehydration solutions if necessary, especially to counteract dehydration from symptoms like diarrhea and vomiting. Ample rest is advised, and known allergens should be avoided. Additionally, continuing prescribed medications like Cetirizine is essential. Seek immediate medical attention if severe symptoms such as abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, or diarrhea occur. A physical examination by a gastroenterologist can provide further insights, and keeping a detailed diary of food intake alongside symptom tracking is highly recommended. Reading food labels attentively to steer clear of hidden allergens is another vital aspect of managing food allergies effectively.

I hope this information helps you, and please reach out if you have any doubts.

Best wishes.
