Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

From my reading, I understand that on average a newborn will feed on two ounces of milk every two hours. My 25-day-old baby seems to be demanding more. His mother will directly breastfeed him on demand but most of the time he will cry for more after every feeding session. We will top up with formula milk and he will usually feed on another two ounces of formula milk. What concerns us now is that after feeding on top with formula milk, he will show some signs of discomfort. Are we overfeeding him? Or is the formula milk not suiting his digestion? The signs of discomfort include crying, sometimes heavy breathing, and most of the time, posseting. My baby had undergone a lumbar puncture when he was 14 days old due to a high fever.

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Please do not calculate the feeds and give the child. Let the child take how much he wants. Nothing is too much for the child. It is a growing child. Coming to the discomfort part, it mostly looks like reflux. You will have to keep the child in an upright position after feeding for quite a while. Most formula milk is easily digestible by children, so you need not worry about the same.

Thank you.
