This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I got my period last week of the last month, which lasted for five days. Then it happened again on the last day of the last month and lasted for two days. Now it is happening again in the first week of this month. Please explain to me what is happening?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Looking at your history, you basically had a proper period last month, which lasted for five days. Then it happened again on the last day of the last month and lasted for two days. Now it is happening again in the first week of this month.

This kind of back-to-back bleeding is usually not a true period. It is more like irregular shedding of the lining. In young women, it mostly happens due to:

  1. Hormonal imbalance.

  2. Stress.

  3. Weight changes.

  4. A small cyst in the ovary can disturb the cycle.

It does not always mean something serious right away, but since you have never had this pattern before, we need to rule out causes.

I am advising you to do the following tests;

  1. Ultrasound of the pelvis to check the ovaries and uterus.

  2. Thyroid profile.

  3. Complete blood count.

For now, keep track of your cycle dates. If bleeding is not heavy (not soaking pads every one to two hours) and you are otherwise stable, no urgent medicines are needed. If it becomes very heavy, you may need medicines to control bleeding, but that decision should be made after examining you and your reports. The best thing to do is to consult a gynecologist in person, get an ultrasound and blood tests, and then regulate the cycle accordingly.

I hope this information helps you.

Feel free to ask further queries.

Thank you.
