Why is there a frequent urge to urinate when resting?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 68-year-old male weighing 150 pounds. I have a sudden and frequent urge to urine when resting or sitting, and it starts leaking. I am facing difficulty at the start and smooth release after a while. I take a tablet containing Amlodipine and Hydrochlorothiazide daily for BP. Sometimes, I take Ranitidine 150 mg.

Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I am sorry to hear about the difficulties you are experiencing with your urinary habits. Sudden and frequent urges to urinate, especially when at rest or sitting, along with leakage and difficulty starting urination, are symptoms that can be concerning. Given your age and medical history, these symptoms could be indicative of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or urinary tract infection (UTI). Benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly known as an enlarged prostate, is a frequent cause of urinary issues in men over 50.

This condition can cause the symptoms you are describing, including a sudden urge to urinate, difficulty starting urination, and leakage. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra, and as it enlarges, it can obstruct the flow of urine, leading to these symptoms. Another possibility is a urinary tract infection, which can cause frequent urination and urgency, along with discomfort. While less common in men, it is still a potential cause and should be ruled out with appropriate tests.

The medications you are taking for blood pressure can sometimes affect urinary function. Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic that increases urine production and could potentially contribute to increased urgency. Acelok (containing aceclofenac) is an anti-inflammatory drug and generally does not affect urinary function, but it is always important to consider all medications in the context of new symptoms. A thorough physical examination by a doctor is a must. They may also recommend a urinalysis to check for signs of infection and blood tests to evaluate kidney function. In the meantime, try to monitor your fluid intake, avoiding excessive caffeine and alcohol, which can irritate the bladder. Addressing these symptoms early can help manage them more effectively and improve your quality of life.

I hope this information helps you.

Get well soon.

Feel free to follow up with any questions.
