Is the rapid growth of a gallbladder polyp suggestive of cancer?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Last month I was diagnosed with a gallbladder polyp of 0.23 inch. I underwent a follow-up ultrasound recently which showed the polyp has grown to 0.29 inch. Is it cancerous because it has grown so rapidly?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern. In the first scan, the size of the polyp was 0.23 inch, while in the next one, it was around 0.29 inch. Usually, it is purely operator oriented. Some radiologists may get 0.19 inch whereas, others might get 0.27 inch. Whether you have a polyp or not matters. Having a polyp could mean that there is a chance of malignancy. To confirm malignancy we advise surgery for a gallbladder polyp. Usually, laparoscopic cholecystectomy is advisable. After the procedure the specimen is sent for a histopathology test, and the report comes after ten days.

Hope this helps.

Thank you.
