Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 40-year-old woman with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). I have recently started experiencing sharp pain in my upper abdomen and lower chest, especially when swallowing. The pain sometimes radiates to my back, which makes it even more alarming.
I am worried this could be a sign of esophagitis, an esophageal spasm, or another GERD complication. What diagnostic tools, like a barium swallow or esophageal manometry, would help determine the cause of these symptoms, and what treatment options might provide relief?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
The symptoms can be due to esophagitis, esophageal spasms, or another gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) complication.
I suggest you do the following tests. These include:
Endoscopy can directly visualize esophageal inflammation or damage,
Barium swallow assesses structural abnormalities.
Esophageal manometry measures muscle contractions, helping diagnose spasms or motility issues.
A pH monitoring test may confirm acid reflux severity.
The treatment depends on the cause. I advise you to do the following.
Take proton pump inhibitors for acid control.
Medications like calcium channel blockers or nitrates for spasms.
Dietary modifications include avoiding triggers like spicy foods and large meals.
Avoid lying down after eating.
Kindly consult a specialist doctor, talk with them, and take medications with their consent.
I hope that you got your answer.
Please let me know if you need help.
Thank you.
