What precautions should be taken while giving anesthesia to kids with behavioral disorders?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a student who is wondering how anesthesia would affect kids who have emotional or behavioral issues, especially kids who have been diagnosed with child behavior disorders. What scientific or clinical insights are available on the interplay between anesthesia and these disorders?

What other factors should medical personnel take into account to guarantee safe and efficient care while giving anesthesia to kids who struggle with emotional and behavioral issues?

Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Whether anesthesia will affect a child with a behavior disorder. The term child behavior disorder is a very vague term that includes a large spectrum of disorders. In general, there is so much literature confirming that anesthesia will increase or decrease the disorder.

Some studies suspect that anesthesia during pregnancy may be a factor for autistic behavior disorder, but it is a small study and still needs more work. Interplay of anesthesia with child behavior disorders has been noted, and it is known that kids with some behavior disorders may become more agitated to begin with and may need higher doses.

No long-term effect of anesthesia per se on these kids can be confirmed. The last one is a guarantee for safe and efficient anesthesia. Just to keep in mind, in the medical field, there is nothing like a guarantee. When the majority do not show any major side effects from any drug or technique of procedure, then it is safe, and if it gives good results to the majority, then it is effective.

Despite this, all drugs, procedures, and even vaccines that are considered safe and effective may have some side effects or complications, but we need to weigh the benefits vs. the side effects. For example, the polio vaccine is very safe and effective, but one out of ten million people may have a problem, and for that person, it is not safe or effective.

To summarize, nothing concrete has been put to conclude that anesthesia is going to affect a child who is a known case of a child behavior disorder; more studies are required to confirm previous studies. Kids with this problem may need higher doses of anesthesia.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
