Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have been dealing with acid reflux and heartburn, especially after meals or when lying down. Recently, I was also diagnosed with iron deficiency anemia, and I am wondering if the two might be related. Could GERD or its treatment be affecting my iron absorption? Are there treatment options for GERD that will not interfere with managing my anemia?
Kindly provide your guidance.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understood your concern.
Stress is a major risk factor for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). However, you mentioned anemia, and for that, we need to rule out Helicobacter pylori infection, which can cause gastritis and other issues.
I suggest you follow the instructions:
Avoid foods that trigger GERD, such as acidic foods, alcohol, caffeinated beverages, chocolate, onions, garlic, and peppermint.
Eat smaller, more frequent meals.
Work on losing weight.
If you smoke, consider quitting.
Avoid lying down for three to four hours after eating, and elevate the head of your bed at night, or avoid lying down.
Get tested for Helicobacter pylori.
Use acid suppression medication if symptoms continue to bother you.
I hope this has helped you.
Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.
Thank you.
