Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
If bone loss is extensive after having a gum graft and therefore, the gum and bone cannot heal fully or properly, what can be done prior to orthodontics or rather, what needs to be done to heal it, and can the person still get braces on in the future and when approximately? Or does it need more time to heal, and nothing further needs to be done? Should another gum graft possibly be done?
Thank you.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
A gum graft heals in about one to two weeks. However, it continues remodeling or restructuring for up to six months after the graft. The health and prognosis of the graft depends upon the hygiene maintained and also gets affected by the systemic response (worsens with pre-existing medical conditions).
Another thing to note is that gum graft is only an aesthetic correction. Unless bone is also grafted, the underlying bone structure in which teeth are housed remains the same. Braces can be considered after six months, provided hygiene is good and gums are relatively uninflamed. Depending on the bone levels, teeth can be moved with gentle force. Complex tooth movements (multidirectional) are usually avoided in such periodontal cases. Minimally required tooth movements are best.
Thank you.
