I have a hair-color allergy. Is there a PPD-free color?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am allergic to hair dye. Please prescribe a para-phenylenediamine (PPD)–free, powder-based hair colour.

Please suggest.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Hair dye–related allergies can be quite uncomfortable and distressing. Thank you for sharing your detailed history and the prescription photo (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity) for better understanding; I truly appreciate it. Based on your history and current medications, this appears consistent with allergic contact dermatitis due to para-phenylenediamine (PPD), which is a very common allergen found in conventional hair dyes.

For the current allergic reaction, you may apply ZyScalp lotion (a Betamethasone-containing topical corticosteroid) only if you are still experiencing redness, itching, oozing, or scabbing on the scalp. Apply it once nightly for up to ten days, and you may wash your hair one to two days after application. If the scalp has already settled and there is no active reaction, you can safely skip this step.

In addition, take Cetirizine 10 mg at bedtime for six to seven days to control itching and other allergic symptoms. Since you are already on Wysolone 20 mg (Prednisolone) and D-Lorinol (Desloratadine), please continue these medications only as advised by your treating doctor.

For future hair colouring, it is very important that you strictly avoid para-phenylenediamine and related dyes. Even with para-phenylenediamine-free products, a patch test behind the ear or on the inner arm at least 48 hours before use is strongly recommended, as “natural” or “organic” labels do not guarantee zero allergy risk. Also, avoid black or very dark shades, as they are more likely to contain chemicals that can cross-react and trigger allergic reactions.

I hope this has helped you.

Please feel free to reach out to me again for further queries.

Thank you.
