Abstract

Giving hair a new look is always an exciting process. Read this article to know more about different hair coloring techniques.

Introduction:

In this cosmetic universe, women always want to follow the current trend. The current trend is not limited to a single shade of color but to blending various colors to give a unique look. The techniques may seem complicated; however, the final look is all important. And the hair salon specialists will help with the best choices.

What Are the Different Hair Coloring Techniques?

Every year, there are a variety of updates on hair coloring. The most popular hair coloring techniques are:

  • All-Over Hair Color: In this technique, a single color is applied all over the hair. It involves three levels of permanence: permanent, semi-permanent, and demi-permanent. The Permanent type involves the application of a formula containing ammonia and peroxide, which cause a permanent chemical change to the hair. The demi-permanent formula does not contain ammonia but contains peroxide and gets washed away in 12 to 24 shampoos. The semi-permanent formula contains no ammonia, adds color like a stain over the hair, and gets easily washed away in 6 to 12 shampoos.

  • Two-Tone Hair Coloring: This technique involves coloring the hair in two shades, the base shade and the other, to darken or lighten the strands. The two-tone technique is carried out with bright, pastel colors and classic ombre or balayage.

  • Highlights: As the word indicates, this technique enhances the hair's natural texture and provides a bright look. The common highlight women opt for is the transition from a dark base color to the lighter one. One type is called chunky highlights, where a wider section of hair gets highlighted. The areas commonly highlighted are in the front, top layers, at the ends, or all over the head. There are two types of highlights: traditional foiling and free-hand hair painting techniques. The highlighting technique suits women with dark and light brown base hair colors.

  • Balayage: This technique differs from highlights as it does not involve using foils. Natural-looking highlights are created by taking small triangular sections of hair and coloring them. The colors added to the hair can be custom blended, allowing precise application and providing a unique look. The technique can apply to busy women as it requires little maintenance. There are various types of balayage such as subtle balayage, partial balayage, caramel balayage, blonde balayage, rose gold balayage, and purple balayage.

  • Foil Highlights: This technique is more comfortable for the specialists as they can add a variety of colors at the same time. The addition of different colors to the hair provides a voluminous look to the hair. The drawback of this technique is the roots become visible when hair grows as colors are added close to the scalp and requires high maintenance.

  • Babylights: This technique is similar to highlights. However, the space between the colors is closer, giving the hair a natural look. It suits every hair type and color. It takes a long time to treat the hair.

  • Lowlights: Lowlights aid in adding darker shades to the hair, thereby highlighting the base color and creating contrast. Thus a person with good base-colored hair can opt for this technique. This technique best suits individuals with curly, long, and thin hair, as it can provide a voluminous bright look.

  • Omber: It can work on every hair type and color. In this technique, the hair appears darker at the roots and gradually lightens towards the tips. A reverse ombre technique is opposite to it, where the hair tips are darker than those at the top. The various types of ombre are blonde, black, brown, silver, ash blonde, pink, and purple ombre.

  • Somber: This technique is a softer version of an ombre where the contrast between the crown and tips of the hair are two shades apart, and they look more blended. This type of hair coloring requires low maintenance.

  • Frosting: This technique suits individuals with short hair. In this technique, the hair tips are bleached or colored with different shades.

How to Choose the Right Technique for Each Hair Type?

After deciding to color the hair, it is important to choose the right technique according to the hair type.

  • Straight: There are endless options for individuals with straight hair. The best techniques that can be opted for straight hair are babylights, ombres, and ombre.

  • Wavy: Hair with subtle waves can also look perfect in all hair coloring techniques. However, they look best when treated with babylights and ombres.

  • Curly: They can look better with highlights and lowlights. However, they also look unique when balayage and babylights are painted and customized over the curls based on the individual’s desire.

How to Take Care of Colored Hair?

Apart from spending all the money and time on hair coloring, it is very important to maintain and take care of the hair after the procedure. The common tips to be followed to maintain the hair color last longer are:

  • Avoid frequently washing hair and wash only once or twice a week.

  • Recommend using dry shampoo if necessary.

  • Use the shampoo and conditioner which best suits the hair type.

  • Rinse the hair with lukewarm or cold water.

  • Use a heat protectant before styling the hair.

  • Use hair masks and leave-in conditioners to avoid hair damage.

Conclusion:

There are a variety of hair coloring techniques that can be tried. And remember to choose the best type of hair coloring technique depending on the base hair color, hair type, and skin color. This is the best suggestion to avoid dissatisfaction after the procedure. Above all, maintenance after the procedure plays a crucial role.
