Are there ways to promote hair growth and prevent hair fall?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 19-year-old female with a height of 23 inches and a weight of 97 lbs. I have been losing my hair badly for six months, and new hair is not growing. Hair strands are fragile and break off often. I also have dandruff. Some of my hair is turning grey. My homeopathy doctor suggested a cream to apply to my hair. I am using it. I have also consulted an Ayurvedic doctor, but it was not effective.

What should I do?

Please suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and can understand your concern.

100 to 150 strands of hair falling every day is very normal. So, hair loss should be considered only if the number of hairs exceeds this. Generalized hair loss in females is mostly due to stress, poor sleep, poor nutrition, and excessive blood loss due to menstruation. Stress alopecia is also common in women who keep their hair very tight in a particular manner, which creates tension in the root and causes hair loss.

Straightening and other procedures also weaken the root. Different conditions, such as fever, typhoid, malaria, thyroid, etc., can also cause hair loss, but these are less common.

Regarding treatment:

  1. Have a good sleep.

  2. Eat proper food with green vegetables and fruits.

  3. Take a multivitamin like Follihair (keratin production AM/PM tablet) or Xtraglo (Ademetionine) for at least three months.

  4. Check your blood hemoglobin. If it is lower, start taking iron and folic acid supplements. Also, thyroid and diabetes should be checked to rule out other causes.

  5. You can also use two percent Minoxidil 1 ml twice daily for a longer duration. In your case, since you have dandruff, it may also be the cause of hair fall. You can use two percent Ketoconazole shampoo (Conaderm) twice a week.

Regarding the application method, first of all, wet your scalp, apply shampoo, and leave it for five to ten minutes. Then take a bath. Avoid applying any kind of hair oil, which is a food for dandruff. You can use conditioners in place of this. Get a review after a month.

I hope this answers your query.

Let me know if I need to assist you further.
