How can I manage hair fall and weak hair roots?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been experiencing hair fall for the past month. My hair density is decreasing, and my hair roots feel weak. Could you please suggest any affordable treatment or medicine?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

At 20 years of age, hair fall for one month is most commonly due to telogen effluvium (stress, illness, poor sleep, weight changes, or exams) or early androgenetic alopecia if there is a family history. The feeling of weak roots and reduced density means more hairs are shedding together, not that the roots are permanently damaged. The good news is that at this early stage, hair fall is often reversible if managed properly.

For affordable and safe initial treatment, you can start with topical Minoxidil 5% solution or foam (hair sprays) applied once daily at night to the scalp. This is the most evidence-based and cost-effective treatment for hair fall and early thinning, and it works by improving blood flow and prolonging the hair growth phase.

Mild initial shedding in the first four to six weeks is common and temporary, as this is due to the effect of Minoxidil on old hairs that were already meant to shed so that new hair grows healthy and thick. Along with this, use a gentle anti-hairfall shampoo two to three times a week (preferably one containing Ketoconazole 1% or Zinc pyrithione if dandruff or scalp oiliness is present).

You may also take a basic multivitamin with biotin, zinc, and iron once daily for two to three months, like tablet Perfectil (biotin, vitamin C, and micronutrients) once a day, which is affordable and helps if there is any nutritional deficiency. Avoid unnecessary oils, frequent styling, heat, tight hairstyles, and excessive shampooing. Ensure good sleep and adequate protein intake (eggs, pulses, and dairy), and manage stress, as these play a big role at your age.

Since diagnosis depends a lot on the pattern of hair loss, I strongly recommend that you upload clear pictures of the front hairline, crown (top of scalp), side profile, and a close-up of the scalp. These photos will help determine whether this is temporary shedding or early male pattern hair loss and guide whether you need any additional treatment or tests.

I hope this helps clarify things.

Take care.
