Why is my shampoo ineffective in controlling my hair fall?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 18 years old and have been facing an issue with hair fall. Earlier, I used to shampoo my hair regularly, but now I have been using shampoo twice a week, but still facing the hair fall issue. Whenever I comb my hair or comb my hand over my hair, I receive plenty of hair on my hands. Can you please help me?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

There are many reasons for hair fall or thinning of hair on the scalp. So first and foremost, we have to find the cause with the help of detailed history and examination.

Some of the common causes are

1. Nutritional deficiency.

2. Hormonal causes like androgenic alopecia (patterned baldness), hypothyroidism, and telogen effluvium (hair fall due to stress).

Unless we find and treat the cause, there is no point in giving non-specific treatment. For example, oils or shampoos do not have any effect on hair growth as they are not absorbed into the skin. Please send photographs for a proper diagnosis and a detailed prescription.

Hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.
